Research of Pointillism –
What is Pointillism –
Pointillism is a type of painting that were done by putting different color of dots together and ended up with a picture filled with all the dots that were painted. It’s a technique where dots of pure color were applied in a specific type of patterns to form a picture that represents objects, places, etc. The main idea to make your artwork a pointillism is that when different tones of color / dots are put onto the art, it’s important when it comes to blending the color together when forming those color into an image. When it comes to painting pointillism, many artists usually uses primary color as their base color when painting a pointillism and followed by secondary color to add in the detail of the picture when each of the dots are being formed together as a picture. The idea of Pointillism was first developed by Georges Seruat in 1886, he was the first one to developed the technique of painting a pointillism picture.

Reflection –
From this picture, you can see that it fits with pointillism perfectly due to to all the techniques that were applied in this art. As you can see in this art, the artists forms different types of color tones together, one color at a single time and as he finishes with one color he moved on to the next one and keep going until an image are formed. Once the image are form, the artists also uses secondary color to blend in the forming image to the background such as in this picture, you can see that the artists tried to blend in the different corners of the forming image.
From the starting point of this unit, we’ve been learning towards the different types of art in detailed. There are in total 10 different types of art we’ve learn towards which includes abstract, cubism, dada, pointillism, pop art, realism, primitivism, impressionism, expressionism and fauvism. These are the major type of art that were used since the middle ages until now. And from the research, I’ve learned a lot of about the different types of art in detail such as learning what it is and the different techniques that were used to paint this art. In our unit, we were assigned to chose one type of art over 10 that we’ve researched.
In my art, I chose to paint pointillism because according to my research, I think that it’s challenging for me to do pointillism out of the overall. From the research, I’ve founded out that when it comes to painting pointillism, it takes a lot of time due to that the it’s a type of painting that uses only dots to create an image of that painting. For example, when sketching a picture of a bottle ,the artist then dots different color onto the bottle to create an actual color of an image. It may contains many color due to that dots are only allowed when painting, so that when using different color it adds in more realistic to the picture. Here’s an example of what I meant –
My Final Artwork –
As you can see from my artwork, it shows a great example of pointillism because of various reasons. One of the reasons was that there are used of various dots / colors to form an image when looking at it from far away. Another reason was that there are used of blending the different color dots together, giving the picture more reality.
How did I do it? (Techniques / skills)
In the beginning of my art, I’ve first started with drawing and sketching a picture I had planned to paint at first. That picture was a picture of a view from a place of mine pointing towards the ocean and human’s activities along the coasts. Which includes all the buildings structure that was constructed along the coasts and as well as some geography along. If you look at the drawing or the sketch closely, you can see that it’s kinda like point perspective because it starts at one specific point and has its own vanishing point when it reaches the mountain. However, I find it hard to draw all the different detail of the picture but I realized that I won’t be needing those details due to that I will be covering them with paints anyway.
When I finished with the drawing, I started the painting right away by the second art’s class we had this term. I start out with covering the hardest part of the picture first by placing dots on the ocean of the picture and the rest later on. For example, as ocean I covered blue, along the coast I covered them with brown and on the land, I covered with green. In each of the different parts of the picture, I chose to cover them with their primary color first because I think that it’s easier to fit in other color along it later on and creates an affect within it. Because pointillism is all about a method of painting that of placing small dots on the painting surface to achieve various affects. When doting different types of color onto my art, one technique that I used was I align the dots into rolls and duplicating them into one another until the picture is fill with the color I need. Other than aligning different dots into a specific area of the picture, another technique I used was dotting the color into random spots of the picture. However, there are many other techniques I can used to paint my pointillism in a better because according to my research, it’s best for me to use their advice.
When I finished with 1 color of each category, I moved on to another by covering each parts with their secondary color. Along the coasts, I added orange + yellow within it and along the ocean, I added some white + dark blue into it, giving it more realistic looking and etc. As noticed, I had added a similar color to the primary color of the section because those color looks fits together and when looking from the far end, it shows a great surrounding of that environment. For example, in the coast, you can see that the color mixed well together, giving the art more realism of the surroundings. When I’m done with covering each parts of the sections with similar color or color that fits into that section, I start to blend them in together using some water and white. Using water and white really helps because most of the color I used in my art work are usually secondary color, giving me an easier time to blend these types of color together. Afterwards, I added some white to the ocean giving it a realistic look of the waves coming towards the coasts. Finally, I edited some of the location in my artwork and I’m done.
From this unit, I’ve learned a lot about pointillism specifically and some basics of other arts. One of the things I learned about pointillism is that it’s all about having good patient and great amount of time. Because without these 2 different things, it’s hard to accomplish due to that pointillism is all about duplicating / doing over and over again. Another is that, when working with pointillism drawing and sketching is not the most primary source to be focus with but instead the painting parts is what important. As long as the picture is not detailed enough, it’s a great for painting pointillism.
As you can see from the picture, the theme of this picture is “Evil (Human) taking over the life of nature away”. I chose to used this theme because I wanted to expressed how humans had a major impact on the environment. One of the evidence in the picture that represents this theme was that as you noticed in the picture, most of the color were based on secondary color due to the flesh clean nature. However, if you looked in between the coast you will see that buildings are painted as black and white which are used to represent what human is doing their own nature. Black represents the mean/evilness of humans + buildings.
Before I started painting this art, I was inspired by many paintings of an artists named “Paul Signac” because he was one of the greatest artist that paints most of his pointillism art based on nature. In each of his different artwork, he puts in a great amount of dots/color into his artwork giving his artwork more realistic. So from all the efforts that he puts in his artwork inspires me and gave me an idea to create my pointillism.
When evaluating my work, I think that I did well on this art work because I had applied all the knowledge I’ve learned from my researched in my artworks. One of the evidence I did well in this art was that I had applied one of the techniques by dotting each the color in rolls/random spots on the painting, so that it keeps the color organized. Which when applying this technique, it helped me with the basics of painting pointillism and giving me lesser time to paint because now I know what to start and end with.
I think that I should have improved on blending in the color together when adding in the second/third color, so that the overall picture looks more realistic because if you looked at the painting carefully, there are occasionally of times when I use blending through out the painting. If next time I did this again, I think that I would work on focusing on the detail of pointillism, so that in the end I end up with a better looking pointillism type of art than this one. Another thing I should improved on is my time management skill because as you noticed in the picture, there are some changes I’d made to the size of my dots in my artwork. One of the great changes you can see is from the ocean dots to the rest. If you noticed carefully, you will see that during the ocean dots, small dots are used but the rest are way bigger. However, due to the amount of time I have, I do not have the time to go in that detailed so I had to rush by painting bigger dots to get the work done on time.
When looking at the overall of this artwork, everything looks perfectly fine and everything is done by the dead line. I think that I earned a 6 out of 8 in knowledge because I had applied great information through out my blog. I should earn a 6 in criterion c also because I have demonstrate on almost everything that was included in the rubric.
